WOMEN IN S&T (WS)

The role of women in science and technology is more crucial than ever in driving innovation and shaping the future. Women in Science and Technology (S & T) division aims to explore the challenges and opportunities for women in S & T, focusing on leadership, career sustainability, and technological contributions. Through insightful discussions with industry experts, researchers, and policy advocates, we will address key topics such aswork-life balance strategies, and the role of women in emerging technologies such as AI, biotechnology, and environmental sciences. The session will also highlight successful mentorship models and networking strategies to empower the next generation of female scientists and engineers. By fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers, we seek to develop actionable solutions to enhance gender diversity in S & T. Participants will gain valuable insights, expand their professional networks, and engage in meaningful discussions on creating a more inclusive and equitable scientific community.

Dr. Hyong Sil Cho is a distinguished linguist and AI expert originally from South Korea, currently residing in the Netherlands. With a Ph.D. in Language Sciences from Université d’Aix-Marseille, an Executive MBA in AI & Big Data from the University of Amsterdam, and graduate studies in French Literature and Linguistics from Seoul National University, Dr. Cho boasts over 20 years of experience in communication between human and machine. She has contributed to speech synthesis, recognition, and conversational AI projects with multinational companies such as Scansoft, Nuance, Microsoft, and Volkswagen. 
An independent technical expert for EUREKA and a member of The European AI Alliance, Dr. Cho has been instrumental in promoting scientific and technological exchange between Korea and Europe, serving as a board member of the Korean Technocal Advidsory Group (K-TAG) for Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) and as former president of the Korean Scientists and Engineers Association in the Netherlands (KOSEANL, 2018-2019). 
Currently, she leads the Euro-Korean Women Scientists and Engineers Association (EKWSEA, since 2023).

Yeongmi Kim is currently a professor in the department of Medical & Health Technology, MCI, Austria. Her principal research interests are sensory-motor rehabilitation, assistive technology, medical robotics, human computer interaction, and haptic feedback interfaces. She obtained her PhD in Mechatronics from GIST in 2010 and worked as a postdoctoral Researcher, research associate at ETH Zurich at the Rehabilitation Engineering Lab and University of Sheffield until 2014.  During her PhD studies, she participated in the WISE mentoring program and received the best project awards from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, Korea under the Watch 21 (Women's Academy for Technology CHanger in the 21st century) program in both 2006 and 2007.

Conveners / Chairs	PROF. JUNG, Eunok Konkuk University Show Profile Eunok Jung has been a professor in Department of Mathematics at Konkuk University in Korea since 2002. She earned her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Courant Institute, New York University in the USA. After completing her Ph.D., she joined the Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher and later a senior researcher for three years. Dr. Jung is an expert in the field of Mathematical Biology, especially in Mathematical Modeling and Simulations of Transmission Dynamics of Infectious Diseases, Multi-dimensional Modeling of Cardiovascular Diseases, Mathematical Modeling in Biomedical and Bio-industrial Applications, Numerical Methods in Computational Biofluid Dynamics, Optimal Control Theory: Biomedical Applications and Epidemic Diseases. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Jung has played an important role in collaborating with government agencies such as the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) to provide scientific evidence for COVID-19 policies based on mathematical modeling. In addition, based on the recommendation of the Korean Mathematical Society, she received the Presidential Commendation in the field of science and technology in 2020. Furthermore, in 2022, she was awarded the Minister's Commendation from the Ministry of Health and Welfare based on the recommendation of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Dr. Jung served as the 7th President of the Korean Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Currently, she is the Chairperson of the International Cooperation Committee at the Korean Foundation of Women's Science & Technology Associations and also serves as the Chairperson of the COVID-19 Mathematical Modeling Task Force (TF) team in Korea.
Synopsis	This session, titled "Innovating Together: Bridging Research and Industry", explores the dynamic interplay between academic research and industrial application. Taking place on August 27 (Thu) from 13:00 to 14:30 at TU Wien in Vienna, the session will bring together researchers, innovators, and industry professionals to share insights, best practices, and collaboration models that accelerate innovation. Holding an MA from the Seoul National University, a Ph.D. from the Université d’Aix-Marseille, and an Executive MBA from the University of Amsterdam, she boasts two decades of expertise in speech technology. Throughout her career, she spearheaded numerous successful projects for industry giants such as Scansoft, Nuance, Microsoft, and Volkswagen. Dr. Cho's active involvement as a board member of the Korean Technical Advisory Group for the Korean Institute of Advanced Technology reflects her commitment to fostering collaboration between Korea and Europe, advocating for Eureka and Horizon 2020 projects. She further serves as an EUREKA Independent Technical Expert and is a proud member of The European AI Alliance. Her management and social skills garnered recognition from the Korean scientific community, leading to her appointment as the President of the Korean Scientists and Engineers Association in The Netherlands in 2018/2019. Presently, she continues to contribute to leadership in the scientific community as the President of the Euro-Korean Women Scientists and Engineers Association. PROF. SHIN, Hyea Un Chungbuk National University Show Profile Mrs Hyea Un Shin holds a B.S. in Pharmacy from Seoul National University and a Ph.D. in Law from Korea University. She is a professor at Chungbuk National University School of Law, specializing in intellectual property law. She has served as President of the Korean Patent Law Association and is currently President of the Korea Intellectual Property Law Association. She also contributes to national IP policy through various governmental advisory and mediation roles.
Synopsis	This roundtable explores the vital role of women scientists and engineers in advancing research, development, and innovation. Panelists will address key challenges such as gender bias and underrepresentation, while highlighting the importance of leadership, mentorship, and inclusive policies. The session will also emphasize how diverse perspectives drive innovation and conclude with actionable strategies to promote gender equity in the environments for Research, Developoment and Innovation. SHIN, Eunju KIAT Show Profile Eunju Shin is currently in charge of the K-Girls’ Day program at the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), supporting female students in pursuing STEM education and careers. Since last year, she has been working to foster a global mindset among participants by organizing visits to international industrial sites and facilitating meetings with Korean women engineers abroad.
Synopsis	This session presents a program developed to provide K-Girls’Day supporters with direct exposure to the global advanced technology industry. Building upon this experience, the program seeks to strengthen participants’ competencies for future engagement in STEM fields as professional women, while underscoring the significance of their roles as supporters and further motivating their active participation. [WS4] Global Voices, Shared Journeys: EKWSEA-WISET Cross-Mentoring Talk Concert in Vienna

Her work includes digitalization, Research Data Management System, and data analysis. She earned MPhil and PhD in theoretical computer science from HKUST and Utrecht University. Her experience in ETRI includes R&D in digital content technology and in future software technology. Her interests include knowledge graphs, data governance and digital transformation.
Synopsis	Following the success of the April live session in Paris, the EKWSEA-WISET Cross-Mentoring Program continues its global dialogue with a vibrant talk concert in Vienna. The event will feature a keynote speech by the President of WISET, setting the stage for an open and inspiring conversation between mentors and mentees from Europe and Korea. This session aims to foster cross-cultural exchange, share personal growth stories, and strengthen global networks among women in science and engineering.
