Soft x-ray spectromicroscopes at Pohang Light Source as material probes |
PROF. SHIN, Hyun-joon |
Chungbuk National University |
HJ Shin earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Seoul National University in February 1986, followed by a Master of Science in Physics from the same institution in February 1988. He completed his Ph.D. in Experimental Plasma Physics at Pohang University of Science and Technology in February 1995.
After completing his doctoral studies, HJ Shin worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Advanced Light Source at Berkeley National Laboratory from March 1995 to May 1996. He then joined the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory at POSTECH as a staff scientist in June 1996, where he remained until February 2021. During his tenure at POSTECH, he served in several leadership roles, including manager of both the SPEM beamline from 1996 to 2021 and the STXM beamline from 2013 to 2021. He was promoted to head of the beamline department of PLS-II from March 2016 to February 2018, then became head of the beamline departments of both PLS-II and XFEL from October 2017 to December 2019, and subsequently served as head of the PLS-II division from December 2019 to August 2020.
In March 2021, HJ Shin transitioned to Chungbuk National University, where he currently holds a position as a professor in the Physics Department. Since March 2025, he has also been serving as a visiting scholar at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Throughout his career at the Pohang Light Source, HJ Shin served as manager of beamlines for two soft X-ray spectromicroscopes: a scanning photoelectron microscope (SPEM) and a scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM). As a leader of the beamline department at PLS-II, he was instrumental in opening and cultivating the spectromicroscopy field in Korea. His move to Chungbuk National University in 2021 was motivated by his goal to help construct and boost application activities for the Korea 4-GSR, which is currently under construction in Chungbuk Province, Korea.
